White Blood Cells

ANALYTES

Analytes are the substances measured in this test, which include:

  • White Cell Count

  • Neutrophils

  • Monocytes

  • Eosinophils

  • Basophils

These markers fall within the Medicare-funded pathology scope and are regulated under mainstream medical diagnostic services. As such, they are not available through specialty functional laboratories.

If this testing is clinically indicated, Remedy Lane advices you to consult your general practitioner, who can arrange appropriate pathology referral within the Medicare framework.

Please note that while white blood cell counts provide useful insight into immune status, they do not, in isolation, offer a definitive measure of overall immune function. The immune system is complex and depends not only on the number of immune cells present, but also on how effectively those cells perform.

For example, neutrophils must be able to migrate appropriately to sites of infection, immune cells must communicate accurately through coordinated cytokine signalling, and cells responsible for engulfing pathogens must carry out effective phagocytosis.

Additionally, adequate oxidative burst activity is required to destroy invading organisms once captured, and proper antigen processing and presentation is essential for activating a targeted immune response. If any of these processes are impaired, immune performance may be compromised even when white blood cell counts fall within the normal laboratory range.

For this reason, clinical intervention may be warranted based on symptomatology and overall clinical presentation, irrespective of laboratory findings.
