Analytes are the substances measured in this test, which include:

  • Hydrogen

  • Methane

A SIBO breath test is designed to detect Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, a condition in which excessive or misplaced bacteria are present in the small intestine.

During the test, you drink lactulose after fasting, if excess bacteria are present in the small intestine, they ferment this sugar too early, producing gases such as hydrogen and methane. These gases are absorbed into the bloodstream and exhaled in your breath, where they are measured at regular intervals.

Results are interpreted based on how much hydrogen and methane rise above baseline levels during the test.

  • A rise in hydrogen of 20 parts per million (ppm) within the first 90 minutes is considered positive for SIBO.

  • A methane level of 10 ppm or higher at any time during the test is also considered positive, even if hydrogen does not rise significantly.

  • When hydrogen and methane are assessed together, a combined increase of 12–32 ppm above baseline suggests a mild overgrowth, while 33 ppm or greater indicates a more significant overgrowth.

The results of your health assessment have identified specific signs and symptoms that are clinically consistent with an increased risk of

  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

SIBO is associated with a range of signs and symptoms, which have been clinically verified to include

  • Tongue coating

  • Bloating and abdominal distention

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Flatulence and belching

  • Floating faeces

  • IBS Presentation

  • Fatigue

  • Sluggish bowel motions

  • Facial flushing

  • Acne

  • Bad breath

This investigation is optional and may be used to verify the need for SIBO intervention.

In the absence of testing, the treatment plan is tailored to address suspected contributors based on the presence of specific signs and symptoms and their degree of correlation with those contributors. If testing is undertaken, the assessment will be re-evaluated in accordance with the test results. You will be updated with the test results alongside any treatment revisions

A SIBO breath test collection kit will be dispatched via post. The kit contains a pre-measured lactulose solution substrate and ten sterile breath collection vials, providing two additional vials beyond the required number to allow for repeat sampling if necessary.

Strict adherence to the pre-test dietary and fasting protocol is essential to optimise analytical accuracy. Breath samples are to be collected at the specified time intervals following ingestion of the lactulose solution, in accordance with the instructions provided.

A pre-addressed return satchel is included to facilitate secure transport of the sealed specimens back to the laboratory for quantitative analysis of hydrogen, methane concentrations.
