Moringa also known as ‘the miracle tree’ contains powerful compounds like:

Hydrolysed Tannins, including gallic acid, which can stop egg hatching and kill larvae and bind to proteins in parasites, damaging their structures, and disrupting their energy production.
Saponins, which break down worm egg membranes and can paralyze parasites, weakening them until they are expelled from the body.
Flavonoids, such as quercetin, luteolin, caffeic acid, which can disrupt parasite development, damage egg shells, and enhance the immune response.
Terpenoids and alkaloids, which also play a role in parasite control [36],[37].
These compounds work synergistically, becoming more effective together than alone.

Clinical studies have demonstrated Moringa can:

Inhibit up to 99% of helminth egg hatching
Kill larvae at high rates
Damage worm cuticles and internal organs
Prevent egg development by interfering with proteins in the eggshell
Increases immunity specific to Helminth infection, with an increase in CD4+ T cell numbers [36],[37]

Clinically effective against:

Roundworm - Ascaris lumbricoides
Roundworm - Strongyloides spp.
Whipworm - Trichuris trichiura.
Hookworm - Anctlostoma duodenale
Tapeworm - Hymenolepis spp

A study tested how effective the equivalent of no more than a ¼ of a teaspoon of Moringa leaf extract added to water alone when consumed caused the killing of eggs from three types of helminths. The killing efficiency was as follows:

Ascaris x 96%
Trichuris x 99.5%
Ankylostoma x 98.9% [38]

A study testing the anti-hemetic effect of drinking 10mL of Moringa leaf juice against Roundworm (Ascaris) eggs showed Moringa leaf juice reduced egg counts by 54% after 2 days and 98% by day 4, which was clinically as effective as Mebendazole [39]

A study using Moringa leaf supplements showed a dose dependent efficiency against Roundworm - Strongyloides spp [40].

A study on Moringa Extract against the Tapeworm - Hymenolepis spp demonstrated fewer adult worms and eggs, as well as improvements in gut health, including better villi structure, increases in beneficial immune responses (Th2-type) and higher levels of supportive IgA antibodies [41].

• Nevirapine

Further details are provided below.

Please note that medications may be sold under different brand names, so check the listed active ingredients against your medication packaging.

Major Interactions

Moderate Interactions

Medications changed by the liver

• Atorvastatin

• Simvastatin

• Amlodipine

• Diltiazem

• Cyclosporine

• Tacrolimus

• Midazolam

• Alprazolam

• Rivaroxaban

• Some HIV antiretrovirals

Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. Moringa might change how quickly the liver breaks down these medications. If you are taking medications metabolised by the liver, monitor for any changes in how your medication affects you.

Medications moved by pumps in cells

• P-glycoprotein substrates

Some medications are moved in and out of cells by pumps. Moringa might change how these pumps work and change how much medication stays in the body. In some cases, this might change the effects and side effects of a medication.

Minor Interactions

Medications changed by the liver

• Caffeine

• Clozapine

• Olanzapine

• Theophylline

• Tizanidine

• Duloxetine

• Ramelteon

Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. Moringa might change how quickly the liver breaks down these medications. If you are taking medications metabolised by the liver, monitor for any changes in how your medication affects you.

Medications for diabetes

• Metformin

• Glyburide

• Glipizide

• Insulin

• Sitagliptin

• Empagliflozin

• Semaglutide

• Dapagliflozin

Moringa might lower blood sugar levels. Taking moringa along with diabetes medications might cause blood sugar to drop too low. Monitor your blood sugar closely.

Nevirapine

• Viramune

Moringa might decrease how quickly the liver breaks nevirapine. This might increase the effects and side effects of nevirapine. But it's not clear if this is a real concern.
