L-Theanine provides targeted support for individuals experiencing sympathetic nervous system (SNS) hyperactivation, a condition where the body remains locked in a persistent 'fight-or-flight' state. This state of chronic sympathetic overdrive manifests through elevated noradrenaline levels that fail to return to baseline, creating symptoms ranging from mental restlessness and hypervigilance to physical tension and disrupted sleep patterns.
AlphaWave® L-theanine works through multiple neurological pathways to restore balance to an overactive nervous system. Research demonstrates that L-theanine increases alpha wave activity in the brain, which are associated with a relaxed but alert mental state. Multiple human EEG studies have shown that 50-250mg of L-theanine increases alpha brain wave activity within 30-180 minutes after ingestion [43]. This increase in alpha wave activity supports L-theanine's ability to reduce elevated neural alertness and lower sympathetic drive to modulate noradrenaline release.
The amino acid's calming effects extend beyond brain wave modulation through its interaction with excitatory neurotransmitters. L-theanine can cross the blood-brain barrier and interact with glutamate receptors, where it acts as an antagonist to glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. This leads to a decrease in excitatory neurotransmission, which can indirectly lower noradrenaline levels and reduce the hyperarousal state characteristic of SNS hyperactivation.
Clinical evidence strongly supports L-theanine's ability to measurably reduce sympathetic nervous system activity. In a study of 20 students, 200mg of L-theanine taken twice daily for 17 days demonstrated that sympathetic output was reduced by approximately 15-25% and urinary norepinephrine was reduced by roughly 18-20% compared to placebo [44]. Even more impressive results were seen in acute stress situations, where a clinical trial on 120 healthy young adults found that 200mg of L-theanine provided complete protection against stress-induced SNS activation [45].
The study used salivary α-amylase as a proxy marker for SNS activity during exposure to a standardized stressor. While participants taking the placebo showed the expected increase in SNS activity during stress, those taking L-theanine had a 100% reduction in SNS activity, indicating that L-theanine significantly blunted the sympathetic nervous system response to stress [45]. This makes L-theanine particularly valuable for preventing sympathetic nervous system hyperactivation in stress-provoking environments while still supporting attentiveness and sustained focus, distinguishing it from sedating alternatives.

Some medications, called sedatives, can cause sleepiness and slowed breathing. There is some concern that theanine might also cause sleepiness and slowed breathing. But most research hasn't shown this effect. For now, use theanine with caution if you are taking sedative medications.
