Biome Breathe Probiotic addresses mast cell activation through targeted probiotic strains that help regulate immune responses and reduce hypersensitivity reactions. Mast cells, immune cells rich in inflammatory mediators like histamine, become overactive in allergic conditions, leading to symptoms ranging from respiratory issues to digestive discomfort. The gut microbiota play a fundamental role in preventing mast cell activation by shaping and regulating the immune system, particularly in balancing T helper cell responses and suppressing Th2-dominant immune responses that drive IgE production and mast cell sensitization.

Bifidobacterium breve, one of the key strains in this formulation, contributes to immune regulation by reducing interleukin-5 (IL-5) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, both of which are involved in allergic inflammation. It effectively suppresses airway eosinophilia and inflammation, helping to alleviate respiratory allergic responses. Additionally, B. breve modulates mast cell activation within the gut mucosa, which plays a crucial role in controlling hypersensitivity reactions. In clinical asthma trials, a dose of 1-10 billion CFU per day of B. breve reduced systemic Th2 cytokines and improved peak expiratory flow after 4 weeks [3]. When combined with Bifidobacterium longum, B. breve significantly improved allergic rhinitis symptoms in children, with quality of life improvements also reported [3].

Lactobacillus salivarius works synergistically to support immune balance and mast cell stabilization. Like other beneficial gut bacteria, L. salivarius helps support the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate, which strengthens the intestinal epithelial barrier by reinforcing tight junction proteins and promoting the regeneration of epithelial cells. A healthy gut barrier prevents the leakage of antigens and toxins that could otherwise stimulate mast cells and initiate inappropriate immune activation. This intestinal integrity is crucial in minimizing triggers that lead to mast cell degranulation and histamine release.

The probiotic strains in this formulation also support Treg cell production, which are essential for immune tolerance. Treg cells produce anti-inflammatory cytokines and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), which suppress overactive immune responses, downregulate IgE synthesis, and directly inhibit mast cell activation. These regulatory T cells act as immune "brakes," preventing hypersensitivity reactions and helping to restore proper immune function in individuals with mast cell activation disorders.
