HepatIc Detox ReactIons

It is a large list of health complaints that correlate back to impaired hepatic function and inadequate support of liver metabolic and detoxification processes. Optimal hepatic function and detoxification capacity play a significant role in maintaining overall physiological health, supporting general well-being, and contributing to long-term health outcomes and disease risk and reduction. Once operating in this position, after the initial detoxification an individual can expect to feel improved health.

The challenge is that for many individuals and for a variety of reasons the liver is not optimally functioning. The result of which are high levels of pathogens, chemicals, metals, hormones or toxins existing within systemic circulation, as well as stored into adipose tissues causing a variety of health complaints.

Whilst liver detoxification support is an important component of maintaining physiological balance, increasing detoxification activity too rapidly in the presence of a significant toxic or metabolic burden may place additional stress on elimination pathways. Without adequate support for phase II conjugation and phase III transport and excretion pathways, the processing of compounds may exceed the body’s ability to efficiently eliminate them, which can contribute to temporary symptom exacerbation.

Our supplements are designed for phase 1,2 and 3 support, but we still emphasise the importance of dietary support particularly phase 2 for neutralisation and phase 3 of elimination if symptoms arise.

We encourage close monitoring of the body’s response throughout this process, with attention given to signs and symptoms that may indicate detoxification activity is exceeding the body’s current processing and elimination capacity. Physiological responses often provide important clinical feedback regarding tolerance and individual response, allowing adjustments to be made to better align with the body’s capacity for adaptation and elimination support.

The first area we assess closely is digestive function, recognising that liver detoxification processes increase the movement of metabolised compounds and conjugated waste products into bile, which are subsequently transported through the small intestine for elimination via the faeces. This process can increase exposure of the gastrointestinal tract to toxic compounds, compromising its integrity and the potential for subsequent symptoms to arise, or pre-existing symptoms to be exacerbated, including, but is not limited to:

  • Abdominal discomfort and pain

  • Bloating and gas

  • Constipation: note, if this is your tendency please reach out to us prior to detoxification.

  • Soft or loose bowel motions

  • Nausea

The second place to monitor is energy levels, energy is often the first thing to decline when inflammation is taking place. This can include, but is not limited to:

  • Waking tired

  • Exhaustion

  • Fatigue

  • Aversion to exercise

  • Food cravings (refined carbohydrates, high sugar, high fat)

  • Higher caffeine consumption

Lastly, monitor the body systemically, there are many functioning facets that can be affected and can present in a number of ways, which include, but is not limited to:

  • Skin breakouts (pimples)

  • Skin Rashes / itchy skin

  • Headaches

  • Mood swings

  • Irritability, anger or sadness

  • Anxiety or Tremors

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Allergies

  • High blood pressure

While symptom exacerbation often occurs during increased liver detoxification activity, the objective is to progress at a pace aligned with the body’s individual processing and elimination capacity.

We strongly discourage rapid detoxification approaches that generate significant or poorly tolerated symptoms, as the goal is to support physiological adaptation without causing undue stress or adverse effects.

The protocol on supplementation when detox reactions arise are as follows:

For subtle symptoms

Continue the detoxification whilst ensuring focus on phase 2 and 3 detoxification support. Monitor closely for symptom progression.

For mild symptoms

Take the recommended detoxification supplement protocol every second day, whilst ensuring focus on phase 2 and 3 detoxification support. If symptoms reside, attempt daily dosage and return to every second day if symptoms return.

For moderate symptoms

Take the recommended detoxification dose every third day, whilst ensuring focus on phase 2 and 3 detoxification support. If symptoms reside too subtle or absent, attempt dosage every second day. If symptoms remain subtle or absent, attempt daily dosage and return to every second day if symptoms return.

For pronounced symptoms

Cease liver detoxification supplements for 1 week. Return to taking the recommended detoxification dose every third day. If pronounced symptoms return on every supplemental exposure, reduce the supplemental dose by half and continue every third day.

If symptoms reside too subtle or absent at a full dose every third day, attempt dosage every second day. If symptoms remain subtle or absent, attempt daily dosage and return to every second day if symptoms return.
